MI VS Osagie FACE-OFF
Celebrities weigh in on MI’s interview with Pulse’s Osagie Alonge on the #LooseTalk podcast
It was the most talked about thing on Nigeria’s internet space yesterday and we will not be getting over it in a while.
After what has been described as “a badly-digested article” doubting the continued relevance of M.I’s music, the rapper was invited on the podcast and as the conversation got deeper, emotions got heightened.
In the heat of the moment, Osagie called M.I’s Chairman album “weak”, prodded him to name his weakest album and threw jabs to his label, Choc City’s upcoming artistes.
M.I’s calm demeanour through it all, the friendly manner with which the conversation eventually ended and how all of it defines something new for the culture was what ripped the internet all day yesterday.
Comedian AY took to Instagram to dish on criticism and artiste’s ability (or lack of it) to take it:
Most of us do know that the final proof of greatness lies in being able to endure criticism without resentment. On the other hand they are a lot of people out there in search of an opportunity to vent their opinions in the form of unconstructive criticism. There can be all sorts of reasons for this: – Maybe they disagree with the choices and decisions you have made in your life or work. – Maybe they don’t like your work. – Maybe they don’t like you. – Maybe they have listened to untrue stories about you and have appointed themselves judge and jury on the matter. – Maybe they have made assumptions about you and have chosen to attack you as if those assumptions are true. Whatever the reason you are experiencing unconstructive criticism or a personal attack, here are a few things to keep in mind to help you deal with it: It isn’t actually about you so don’t take it personally. When someone launches a personal attack on you with unconstructive criticism keep in mind that it isn’t actually about you at all. It is about them. It is about their poor, unhealthy and inappropriate communication style. It is about their standards and level of integrity (or lack of!). It is about their assumptions. It is about how they see the world etc. Some people will approach a situation in a healthy constructive way, some people don’t. Whatever way people communicate with you is about who they are and not about you at all. So don’t take it personally. Unconstructive criticism has no value other than the value you give to it. So choose wisely who you listen to and what value you give to what they say. Always maintain your own dignity, integrity and personal standard. My movies have been written off by some critics, yet they made most people happy. They gave me personal fulfilment from awards, to money, and moved on to the point of making the Guinness world records. Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish a man’s growth without destroying his roots. People will always have opinions about your work, but dont allow yourself to get sucked down to their negative standards of communication.
Producer, Sheyman also weighed in calling out Osagie for being rude and unprofessional in his practice of journalism:
I just feel this is wrong in all ramifications… And also doesn’t seem like a professional journalism to me. Alonge I know you are doing a great job with pulsetv but on this one, you goofed! I expected the same level of intellect while vibing with M.I but seems there had been an unresolved issues over the years and finally you got the opportunity to exercise your rant. 1. Well, it may be you trying to put a twist to journalism which made you more creative by using abusive words while interviewing the gentleman. 2. It may also be you are trying to drive traffic to your platform by ballantly disrespecting a man like M.I. These reasons don’t justify your impudence in this video. A lot of people know you to be a controversial journalist. It’s cool to be that but keep it professional. I remember when I had an issue with Dbanj, you were the first to call my phone trying to feed on celebrities problems. I respect you and I don’t expect you to be in this kind of situation. You might have gotten away with your “this person’s music crap, that person’s music wack” opinions about artistes in the past but don’t take it too far. Some of us might take it as far behind the camera. I am sure there’s a better way to apologize to M.I. your arrogant approach is a total desecration on a legendary effort and a disrespect to his built and successful career. I wish every one luck and more success.
